It’s always tricky trying to overcome the summer slump once it’s time to go back to school. Reece’s transition into preschool was rough. So when it was time for kindergarten we did a TON of “social stories” and books to use as conversation starters. Here’s a round up of just a few of the awesome books out there!
What to Expect at Preschool, by Heidi Murkoff
We read this one every day before Reece’s first day of kindergarten!! This is the basics of what to expect in kindergarten. School is for children, not for parents. Parents drop their kids at school then come back at the end of the day. It covers what the class room and teacher will be like, the routine of the day, and how other children will be there to make friends with. Great at setting expectations of preschool. This is our must have for preschoolers.
The Pigeon Has to Go to School, by Mo Williams
I don’t know why but this one eyed Pigeon cracks me up. Reece was also laughing at his silliness over his going to school freak out. Great for nervous kids who are worried about all the stuff you have to do and learn at school.
We Don’t Eat Our Classmates, by Ryan T. Higgins
Silly and has dinosaurs which is always a hit with my kids. The end with the goldfish always makes me laugh a little with Reece and Kat.
School’s First Day of School, By Adam Rex
The first day of school told by school on its first day. The nerves and not knowing what is going to happen. Feeling embarrassed by missteps but making friends in the end and excited for the second day of school.
Milk Goes to School, by Terry Border
A first day of school book with all the food items in the refrigerator. Milk tries so hard to fit in but is instead misinterpreted and called spoiled. By the end of the day everyone recognizes her kindness.
Dancing Dinos Go To School, by Sally Lucas
A level 1 beginner reader book so great for incoming 1st graders. More silly fun about dinosaurs having fun at school. Tons of “ing” words which we have been working on so bonus for us!
Some honorable mentions that are also in our library that we read a ton of last year includes:
- Kindergarten is Cool, by Linda Elovitz Marshall
- The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn
- The Day You Begin, by Jacqueline Woodson
- The Invisible String, by Patrice Karst
Have more great books that eased your kids worries about starting school? Please let me know in the comments! We’re always looking for more awesome book suggestions.
